Email Tutorial [Part-1] :: What is E-mail?

E-Mail (Electronic Mail):

Electronic Mail is the most used feature on the Internet .We knows that it takes days to send a mail across the country and weeks to go around the world. For this reason, it is referred to as the ‘snail mail’. To save time and money, we use the electronic mail. It is fast, easy to use and it is cheaper than the postal mail. In its simplest form, e-mail is an electronic message sent form one computer to another. We can send or receive personal and business related message with attachments like picture or other document.

Working of E-Mail:

Step 1: Type the message using keyboard connected to the sender’s computer. Then
type the recipient’s e-mail address. Press the ‘send’ button.

Step 2: Modem will encode the message and send the same through the Telephone line
              as an analog signal.

Step 3: The message goes to the server of the sender’s service provider. The mail will
be forwarded if the e-mail address is valid.

Step 4: The mail move through Internet and then it will be received by the recipient’s
              provider.

Step 5: When the recipient will connect to Internet, the recipient’s modem will decode
the data and Computer will receive the mail. The recipient will read the e-mail
               message.

It is very important to type the recipient’s address correctly. Similar to the normal postal delivery system, the address must be correct for the message to be delivered. Otherwise the sender will receive a message informing that the mail could not be delivered. The steps have been summarized as follows:

To compose an e-mail message, click on ‘Compose new message’ button on the toolbar. An empty mail form is obtained. This will have following parts:

     (i)            To: Enter the e-mail address of the recipient.

(ii)            Cc: Enter the e-mail address of the person(s) to whom the copy of the message
                        is to be sent.

(iii)            Subject: Enter a brief description regarding the message.

(iv)            Body: Enter the actual message here.

Some mail programs allow to send blind copies. If this feature is available, the other recipients of the mail will not know that a blind copy has been sent to another person. Almost all e-mail programs have the features like address book, signature feature and attachment facility.

In my next lesson you will be learn how to create an email address.

Thank you.......
